Poo Manam Choridhal in Tamil Chettiar Wedding

The Tamil Chettiar Community has roots that can be traced back to 700 AD. They are a group of people with strong business sense and are very particular about upholding cultural traditions. A Tamil Chettiar Wedding is a grand affair with meaningful rituals and ceremonies.

Significance of Poo Manam Choridhal in Tamil Chettiar Weddings
The Poo Manam Choridhal Ceremony is an adorable ceremony that brings the new couple closer. The main intention behind this is to bless the bride and groom with long lasting happiness together. The elders of the family shower their good wishes on the lovely couple as they are preparing for a life long journey ahead of them. What happens during the Poomanam Iduthal is quite interesting and is an event that the couple can save as a precious memory.

Procedure
The bride and groom are made to sit on the ground with their legs folded. The members of the family gather around them and the entire atmosphere is filled with joy and happiness. A bowl filled with scented petals is placed in front of the young couple. The elders among the male family members are asked to dip their hands into this bowl and gather a few petals. They then shower the petals on the legs and shoulder of the couple. This is symbolic of blessing the new couple with a flourishing and beautiful life ahead of them.

Though the journey may have few thorns on the way, the couple is being taught to embrace the soft petals and moments of joy while being there for each other as strong confidants. This ritual in a traditional Chettiar Hindu wedding shows the dedication that both the families show in supporting the next generation. This community strongly believes in solid family ties and do everything they can to pass on to future generations their culture and heritage of rich, strong traditional beliefs.
