Why Mahalakshmi Pooja Ritual is performed in Tamil Mudaliyar Weddings?
The Mahalakshmi pooja is conducted by the Bride at the wedding venue. It is held in the presence of the elders of the family who bless her abundantly. It is mainly done to gain the blessings of Goddess Mahalakshmi. The Goddess is the epitome of prosperity and richness. The Lakshmi Pooja is performed to humbly ask for blessings in her new life as a wife. The function takes place on the morning of the wedding.
- The ‘kalasa’ is worshipped as Goddess Mahalakshmi herself. It is adorned beautifully with colourful flowers.
- Near this is a lighted lamp which is a symbol of purity.
- Silver trays full of auspicious items like Kumkum, turmeric, sumangali set, betel leaves, coconuts, snacks and new clothes are placed as offerings to the Goddess.
- The Bride is dressed in a traditional Kancheevaram silk saree and looks gorgeous.
- She does the pooja rituals as per the instructions from the pandit.
Along with the Mahalakshmi pooja, the bride takes the blessings of all the elders present. It is after this pooja, the muhurtham saree is presented to the bride and she changes into it and comes back into the mandapam for the main wedding rituals.
