
Mudaliyar matrimonials have a lot of rituals that carry great significance. One of the events which is unique in these weddings is the Padapuja. The tradition on Padapuja of washing the feet of the elders is not something new and has been followed from olden days. Earlier even guests would be welcomed by performing this and was considered as a humble gesture by the host.

Some Insights on Padapuja Ritual in Tamil Mudaliyar Weddings
In Tamil Mudaliyar Weddings Padapuja is one of the ways to show respect to the elders who raised both the bride and groom. The Padapuja / Pada Pooja is done by both the bride and groom to their respective parents. It is essential for the Padapuja to be performed to married couples. If either of the parents of the groom/bride is no more, then some other elderly couple (preferably from the paternal side) stands in for the parents. In some cases, even if both parents are present, Padapuja is performed to an elderly couple usually the family head (eldest uncle) or the eldest living elderly couple in the family.
What Happens
A large plate is used for the Padapuja on which the parents of the groom step on and the groom washes their feet with water, milk and applies sandal paste seeking their blessings. The same is carried out by the bride for her parents.
The Significance
Spiritually it is believed that by washing the hands and feet there is a release of energy or vibrations that are beneficial to the performer of this act. It also thought that by performing Padapuja the performer gets more divine qualities, such as strength in his/her faith, devotion and humility. All types of pujas have a purpose and are not abstract that has to be accepted blindly. There is a strong reason for performing them.
