Uniting The Mangal Sutra - (16 days function)
The Kamma weddings in India conclude with the Padaharu Rojilu Pandaka which is a ritual for ‘uniting the Mangalasutra’. This ceremony happens after 16 days of the wedding. The mangal sutra is considered a symbol of unconditional love for the husband, commitment to marriage, and a prayer to God for his long life and hence this function is significant. It is also an indicator of the harmony between the bride’s and the groom’s family.
Procedure for Uniting The Mangal Sutra ritual after Telugu Kamma Weddings
- The groom or his family members perform this ritual. They invite close friends and family mostly ladies of both sides
- An auspicious time is fixed as per the advice of an astrologer
- The bride adorns a new saree and performs pooja before she changes the Mangalasutralu from the sacred yellow thread to a Mangalasutra design in gold chain
- In this black beads will be added between the gold plates of the mangal sutra so that they do not crash and break
- The groom's sister plays a major role in this function as she is the one who removes the black beads called the Nallapusalu and the Mangalasutram from the bride's neck
- The mother or the mother-in-law of the bride will help her arrange it into a chain and wear it
- A payasam has to be prepared for offering to the god
- The couple seek blessings of elders after she wears the united Mangalasutra - It becomes united when both the black beads and the golden mangalsutra are made together as one chain.
Once the ceremony is over, the bride will take a bath and wear new clothes and meals are served for the gathered guests and the food will be mostly non-vegetarian.
